AI Employees by Tech Local
How to hire an AI employee in South Africa
Hiring an AI employee starts with the work your team needs help with. Choose a named supervisor, agree a practical role and check that the software can work with your tools. Tech Local turns that into a written service agreement and an onboarding week at your East London office.
1. Find the recurring bottleneck
Ask someone on your team which part of their day keeps getting pushed back. Good candidates include organising incoming documents, preparing routine replies, compiling status updates and drafting quotes from approved information. Choose a task whose finished result can be checked, rather than starting with a vague wish to “use more AI”.
Keep a small set of examples: a typical input, a good finished output and an exception that needs a person’s judgement. These reveal more about the job than a long list of software features.
2. Name the manager and agree the role
Pick the person the AI employee will support. They need authority to explain the workflow and obtain the necessary access, plus time to review early work. Other people may benefit, but one named supervisor keeps instructions and accountability clear.
Before payment, agree duties, expected workload, working hours, turnaround, acceptance checks and approval boundaries. Include what happens when information is missing or a task falls outside the role. Tech Local’s responsibility and your team’s contribution should both be written down.
3. Match the tools and monthly package
A familiar product name is only part of the choice. Check whether the selected account can connect the tools you use, perform the required tasks and meet your data-handling requirements. Regional access and product features can change. Confirm the specific arrangement before committing.
Choose either an all-inclusive monthly price or a Tech Local service fee alongside your own suitable subscription. We usually start with ChatGPT, then assess alternatives where the role calls for them. You do not have to arrive knowing which model to choose.
4. Make time for the first week
Onboarding includes five visits, with one scheduled office session on each of five weekdays. We agree session lengths and times before payment. Your supervisor brings the context, examples and authorised access; we help connect the tools, teach the working rules and practise the agreed tasks.
Use representative work and review the results together. An unusual enquiry or missing document is useful: it shows where the employee should ask instead of guessing. The handover should leave your supervisor knowing how to request work and reach Tech Local for help.
5. Review the work, then grow the role
Use the agreed checks to judge whether the work is useful. Bring missed tasks and changing needs to the monthly review. The service is month to month, and any change affecting the price is agreed before it applies. A full first-month Tech Local payment refund is available when requested within 30 days of the first onboarding day; customer-paid provider subscriptions are excluded.
